Howdy.
Again a hiatus of sorts, but I cannot apologize as there was not enough time, energy or enthusiasm to participate in the blogosphere. However, I am going to try again-ish. So today I am going to enlighten the readers on the wisdom of our middle schoolers:
Teacher: “Who can tell me about the war of 1812?”
Student: “The war of 1812 wasn’t fought in 1812.”
Teacher: “Can you expand on that thought?”
Student: “Well, the War of 1812 was actually fought in 1949 when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.”
Teacher: “Excuse me? Is that supposed to be funny?”
Student: (dead pan and serious as if feelings hurt) “Huh?”
Now I have gone over and over this conversation with the teacher this occurred with. And the fact that this student is who he is makes the difference. This student does not get ‘funny’ has no concept of humor and seriously believed that he knew what was going on that day in class.
And while we are in the realm of history and geography here are a few more of m favorite moments:
Student 1: “Did we get potatoes from the Irish?”
Student 2: “No! We got them from God!”
(no comment… what kind of follow up can you really give… other than a “Stop talking)
Student 1: “How do you spell Mississippi?”
Student 2: “The river or the state?”
Student 3: “why does it matter they are spelled the same!”
Student 2: “nu-uh!”
Student 3: “w.o.w…”
This went on for about five minuets with various members of the class chiming in and me wanting to see how far it might go thus saying nothing. Finally we wrote it out on the board to visualize the correct answer…
