Ya know its gonna be an adventure-some-day when...

You know today (Friday) is going to be a good day when you step- on-a- rat…

Oh you read that right.

I stepped on a rat this morning as I walked into work and down a flight of steps. I was once told that in London you are never more than 1.5 meters (6 ft.) away from a rat, but I have never seen one in person. Today I stepped one. I thought I could feel its fur through the flip fops and across the side of my foot as it scampered to the corner of the stairwell which I ran through before peeking around and taking pictures.

Following that I had a great morning class—circle time was fun and energetic; Obama celebrated his birthday; we did some math and went to the playroom; and Friday’s are science days so today we made a pan flute and played it!

My afternoon classes were uneventful and for “my” overtime class we played the telephone game and heard a John Henry Tale in which he didn’t die (a first that I can remember). I also found out that my reading spead is around 300 words per min. because we were testing the kids speeds so they tested mine. I thought it was cool enough.

Finally, as the work day drew to a close-I cleaned up some of my desk and went to ask my boss a question about tomorrows rafting trip during which I was invited with Chris and Liam to go beer and watermelon shopping followed by dinner. I agreed. So we went to Lotte Mart and bought enough beer for 40 people and chips and 4 watermelons. After we dropped off the car to the school Manila-teacher took us to eat at this nice Korean place and, as usual, tried to get us drunk.

While there Chris mentioned being completely serious all of next week. I said he couldn’t do it. A wager was born. Several ideas were thrown out finally we decided on a point scale type thing. $50 (well won) for the week if he can be serious-no laughing/joking etc. for the entire week and vice versa—all to be paid in drinks at the end of the week. Basically $10 (won) per day that can go either way. ---

Finally, we stopped at E-Mart on the way home. Chris and Liam bough water guns and some balls to through around and Chris also bought a watermelon as part of a joke for another teacher. However I thought we were a joke in the making-two guys and a girl in E-Mart at midnight on a Friday buying water guns, and a watermelon…

Like I said it has to be a good day when it starts out with stepping on a rat…

  1. I would have totally freaked out!!! Maybe someone would have been able to collect life insurance, if that had happened to me. Does that bet include or exclude picture taking? I know how I would bet...heehee. Sounds like a good ending to the week.

  2. Hello Cass I am Kat, which would be your third cousin. I met your mom a week ago and found out that you are in Korea teaching. I am currently in Hermann, MO visiting with my dad, Patrick McGuire Sr. I will be heading back home to North Carolina on Friday, 10 July. I am interested in reading your blog about Korea and would like to share that I too have spent some time in Korea. I was there from Oct 94 to Oct 95. I would like to share my experience with you if you are interested. My email address is klabarge@embarqmail.com and would like to chat with you when I get home. In the mean time, have fun and take care.
