Teacher's Day; Seoul Shopping and Pay-off

I’ve been bad; I am sorry/ I know. I should be typing more, but I have been so exhausted by the end of the day that I have been coming home and either falling asleep or zoning out about to fall to sleep.

Teachers Day: A Day that celebrates students love for their teachers and parents who want to, possibly, bribe them into being nicer to their kids. I did not get a lot, but what I got was very personal gifts from my students. Victoria wrote a long note and picked out some nail polish, she notices my nails often; Dan wrote a very sweet note; Oliver’s Mom sent him with some earrings; and Billy’s mom sent a lotion for scars because “I fall a lot;” Lyna gave me a ring; and Kitty’s mom sent flowers and earrings and another manicure (she owns a shop). Several other little nick-knacks show an appreciation and love of our students including lotions, flowers, and candy. Others received everything from afore mentioned candy and flowers to Dior make-up and expensive Nike shirts. It was very interesting to see what value was placed on different things and people.

Saturday: A little back story first-Brooke wanted to shop in Seoul before she went home for a month; Sarah wanted clothes; I will use any excuse to spend time in Seoul (but I wouldn’t want to live there-where would I then go to get away?) So Brooke and I decided-Sarah and I had coffee Thursday and she jumped on the wagon, or in this case, bus up to Seoul. Another part of the back story: I had to buy two tickets because I lost the first one I purchased during a taxis ride oin Thursday night. Friday I re-purchased that ticket-Sad Day-.

Saturday morning: on the bus at 6:35 arrival in Seoul 10:30; Goal: Itaewon (a favorite) to shop and see…Food consumed throughout day: Mexican; Tofu Burger (with eggplant and zucchini! delicious!) and my first Cold Stone ice cream (vanilla with straw, ras and blue berries!). Shops: mostly clothing and souvenir; plus being shown the two foreigner food stores and the foreigner book store…Basically a “girls” day of shopping, eating and gossiping. Armed with Dior lip gloss (from one of Brooke’s students) and umbrellas/a hoodie to stay dry-ish (it rained ALL day and not just a light drizzle, but gushing downpours) we spent an entire day with the rule: no regret and no questions. It was fabulous.

Today (Monday): I was almost brought to tears today by a couple of my students; for the first time my students all really wanted to be in class and talked, talked, talked this morning. Their writing and workbooks, though slow going today, haven’t looked better. They joked and bantered with me. “Silly Sandra-Teacher very, very silly” and then several of them came up to me in the play room and gave me hugs and kisses and told me “very, very love you Mamma-Sandra-Teacher…” I couldn’t believe it.
