So, Korea has an entire day dedicated to children. When most Americans are getting drunk on margaritas and scarffing down tacos on Cinco de Mayo; Korea is celebrating children.
We had holiday on the fifth, but then also managed holiday on the fourth due to a new commitment later this month—giving us the four day weekend I was gloating about earlier. However the holiday began Friday at school when we celebrated children’s day with the children. We took the kindergarteners to a park with dino slides and painted their faces and gave them balloons and nick-nacks. The afternoon kids also got presents and one of my students’ fathers sent pizza and pop and salads from Pizza Hut to the kids in the class. It was a huge party for most of the day.
Friday night was also very interesting. It was a teacher’s dinner/potluck. All of the LCI teachers were in attendance; ALL, the Korean kindergarten, the Korean English, the “M” night school teachers and, of course, the bosses. There was a ton of food and drink as well as good company. It was really nice to get a chance to talk to some of the teachers on a non-“business” level and get to know some of the Korean teachers better.
After the dinner we headed out to the downtown area to say goodbye to one of the teachers whose contract was up. He is heading to China, the states then Vancouver.
The rest of the weekend has been spent leisurely: resting, catching up on Bones and Fringe (a co-worker showed me how to download shows here), shopping in Seoul (and eating Mexican food!), and (oddly one of my favorite things-) cleaning.
Happy Children’s Day and Cinco De Mayo!
