Sooooo, my second week here did not go as well as I wanted it to. Friday went a little better teaching wise and that night Brooke showed me an open market just a street over from where we work; It was smaller than it would have been on a worm night (according to Brooke), but to see some of the things will never cease to amaze me. Octopus cut open and just sitting there, crabs in a tank being picked out by the customers. I loved/love, will continue to love as I continue to go- it.
Saturday we had planned on going thrift shopping, but Sarah and Aiden finally got to move into their new apartment so we are delaying that adventure. Instead I decided I should finally attempt to grocery shop; I have been living off fruit and peanuts/cashews for the last week. So I went to Lotte Mart (kind of a Super Target) and bought some salad stuff and found some Special K (which is my favorite) and since I had strawberries from the market Friday night decided to get some. Big mistake! It has some sort of sugar coating or something…and the milk was awful…I couldn’t finish it and eventually threw-up what I did manage to eat and continued to be sick for the rest of Saturday night... Food will be a continuous challenge here I think...
Sunday has gone better. I walked around the park for a while in the morning and stopped at E-mart (Wal-Mart) for some water and more cleaning supplies. It was very sunny this afternoon and decided to lie in the sun in the park for a while; that is when Brooke caught my attention. She spend time just laying out in the park when it is nice and sunny; so we sat and talked till the setting sun began to make it a little chilly out. Now I am doing laundry and trying to get my internet to work so that I can post this in a bit.
This park that I am mentioning is Memorial Park to a political uprising in the 1980’s here in Gwang-Ju. It has large fountains, statues and many paths/exercise areas. I walk through it to get to and from work and the local [Target/Wal-Mart] stores. I think it will be one of my favorite places in this city. At night, like everything else in this city, it is lit-up bright as noon and, they say, the fountains are the most beautiful thing in the city (fountains should be turned on in the next month or so…)
I have also found out that I am not at the top of the betting pool on who will be the first to go! I feared I might be as this past week has not gone the smoothest, but it is a little comforting to think that no one else is sensing the negativity I feel. There is also a possibility of a trip to Seoul next weekend. I am interested in going up there to see what all the hubbub is about. We will see…
